Caught the bug. New ten gallon.

I tried really really hard. I really did. But finally it got me. The planted tank bug.

I hardly ever get to see my beloved 75g during the day and the other two, a 10 and a 20, are at a different residence. So ... I've decided to set up a ten gallon on my desk.

I've decided to pick up a bag of Eco Complete because it looks really pretty and I'm wishing I had tried it in my 75. Now I'll get to see what it's really like. The bag of this should be the only thing I actually need to buy.

I already have a 10 gallon tank, a HOB filter, DIY CO2, driftwood. For lighting, I'll go low tech with two of those 10watt (?) screw in fluorescents so I don't have to retrofit or build a canopy or anything.

I have five harlequin rasboras that will swim around in it. I'm planning on having Java moss, java ferns, sag. subulata, and I dunno... moneywort or something. Would hairgrass grow/spread in only 2WPG?

My main question is what do people usually do about fertilizer in small tanks? Flourish? Will fertilizer make a difference in my setup?

I'm going to try to get it set up tomorrow. I think one of my LFS carries Eco Complete. Hopefully. I don't want to pay shipping on any more substrate.

Hm, well I was going to add two incandescent light strips with two 10w screw in fluorescents each but in the last x-amount of years since I've looked at lighting, it seems that now all you can find are fluorescent hoods.

I don't want to pay too much which I why I wasn't going to retrofit. The bulbs that come with the strips are 15w. I would add two of those, but the price they are charging for these things are steep. $30-$40. I could afford one, but I don't want to pay that much for two.

I'd really like to not spend more than $50 for lighting.

look at a hardware store for like closet lighting. you can get shorter strips that are fairly cheap that will hold usually flouresent or incandesent bulbs. i would also maybe look for like a desklamp or a clamp lamp maybe that you can position overhead of the tank and put flouresents in. most the screw in flour base are around 14-20 watts. unless you decide to go with some of the fancy lighting brands you arent going to get LOWER watts. so the cheaper ones are actually to our benefit now. the hard time is just going to be finding a light that has the color temp you want. most house lamps are the soft white which is like 2800k or so and makes the tank look like its at a sunset ( as it was recently stated to me ). however if you can find a big enough housing there is a 20 watt, 6500K daylight screw in flouresent at wal mart. only runs like 5 bucks for it but the bulb is kinda big so finding a light for it might be tricky, i spent the better part of an afternoon looking for one. hope this helps

PetSmart, marineland incandescent hood ($22), replace bulbs with marineland 2x15watt 7000k screw in CF (2x $10).

3wpg of 7000k CF

total = $42 USD.
