Look at my tank :3

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...9/IMAG0989.jpg

Its a 55 gallon with two aqua-tech 30/60's, two inches of plant medium gravel and one inch of plain gravel. I have goldfish, ghost shrimp and a sucker fish. For plants i just have 3 bunches of wisteria (sp?). The rock house came with the tank but I'm gonna take it out soon and put in a crashed hellicopter. I'm gonna go for a vietnam/jungle theme. What do you guys think?

Hey, you're local!

I can't really make many suggestions if you're planning to put a resin helicopter model in there, but you can see the tank in my sig for a real planted tank... 99% of the time, a fish tank with plants will fail. Once you start a dedicated planted tank with fish, then you begin to succeed.

That might just be my new motto.

Seriously though, if you can do an awesome planted jungle, find a new home for the goldfish, and add a huey nestled into the jungle, I think it would look awesome. But you have to start by getting rid of the goldfish and doing a plantedtank right.

The crashed out copter is from pet smart. I have 4 year old twin girls and a 2 year old son so I got the goldfish first to build up the bacteria in my filters and to make sure the kids don't kill everything with cookies or fruit loops. I'd rather lose 4 bucks worth of goldfish to "cookiecide" than 200 bucks worth of nice stuff. Once i get everything planted and set up how i like it then I'll find homes for the goldfish and get some nicer fish.

You don't have to get rid of the rock house, there are caves in the jungle!

My roommate says I'll die by giant turtle.

I took all the fake rock caves out, added some real rocks, planted some more wisteria and added a bubble jungle hut. I was gonna get a crashed hellicopter but one of my lights broke so now i gotta buy a new light I currently have 20 gold fish, 10 ghost shrimp and a plecko. The ghost shrimp went nuts over the little caves I made em, the gold fish are pissed they can't get in there and bother them.

Sounds like you have a good idea for a theme for your aquarium, cant wait to see what it looks like in a couple of weeks. Man it would be cool if you could get a helicopter and put a C02 diffuser in it and have the C02 bubbles spin the blades as it comes out!! Stick with it and keep us updated.

I finally got a new light and that hellicopter I've been wanting. I also got a snail, some grasses and some dwarf grass. I took the grow light out the right side and replaced it with a full spectrum bulb, hopefully that'll help with my brown alge problem.

The brown algae (diatoms) should go away on its own after the tank becomes more established. (Few months maybe)

I've also noticed my plants aren't super green. They grow great but they're barely green.

The light looks kinda dull, might be why.

The light's alot brighter than it looks in the picture. I didn't notice the plant color change till after I put in the air powered jungle hut, thats what made me think it was a co2 problem.

I went to the fish store today and picked up a pH test kit and a kH test kit, i also picked up some flourish fertilizer. My pH is 7.5 and my kH is 4 so that means my co2 is 4.7ppm, right? should I add some co2?

My friend, you really should wait before buying anything else and read around on this site. You are going to end up spending more than you should on things that you will need to replace later if you want a successful planted tank.

You need a good substrate, good lighting, preferably CO2 injection, and a good dosing scheme of ferts, micros and macros.

I'm excited about your helicopter idea, very cool! With proper preparation and patience I'm sure it will turn out great.

How come you didn't buy the API Master Test kit?

How long has your 55G tank been setup?

Did you cycle your filters yet?
