DIY Excel using glutaraldehyde

I want to make my own Excel using glutaraldehyde, however I do not know what kind/brand to get or how much I should mix so that's safe to use.

Any advice or opinions on using glutaraldehyde would be greatly appreciated!

Ive been using metricide for a while now. its a lot cheaper per gallon and is like 2x as concentrated. (not sure on the exact concentrations, if you search for it, its out there) If you could get ahold of pure glut then Id guess you would just want to mix it with distilled water to a similar concentration as excell comes, however I dont have experience with that...

Do you use the metricide that comes up when you look it up on Amazon, a white and green bottle? Also how well do you think that it works for you? And do you have any sensitive fish like cory cats?

that sounds like the right bottle. I dont have sensetive fish and mine arnt bothered by it. Im dosing the same amount of liquid as is recomended for excell, which works out to roughly twice the glut. and its working at least as well as excell did! I just fill my old excell bottle with metrecide so I dont have to bother with that big gallon jug.
it comes with some activator... just throw that out.

There is more then one concentration strength of Metricide. Be careful with that. The stronger it is the more diluted you can do. Here is the calculator I like to use to dilute it with Distilled water. It will even tell you what the strength is of the various sources. Such as Metricide 14day is 2.6% and the 28day is 2.5%.

And you DO NOT use the activator... just toss it.

Check this site for your calculations.

Don't use the activator.
Don't purchase Metricide OPA or Cidex OPA. They aren't glutaraldehyde.

As mentioned above do not use the Opa.

Use the metricide 14. Or 28. Lots of places with decent deals. The last gallon I bought cost me less then $20.
