Removing a layer of fallen soil?

Hey, so I just put water into my dirt-capped-with-sand tank, and I suppose I didn't put enough of a sand cap on top so a lot of dirt was kicked up. How do you usually go about removing that layer of dirt that falls on top of the sand without making too much more of a mess?

I had this problem recently. I skim the floaties with a net. The prices that sink back down on top of the cap I syphon up with gravel vac. I have sand and the dirt is light enough to suction up without getting sand.

U can also strategically drop more sand to cover up with dirt.

Oh and i slowly pour the water into the tank over a sponge. I find its easier than a bowl and plate. The sponge absorbs impact and rises with the water.
