Advice on pruning planted water sprite

Hi. The last time I tried pruining my planted Water Sprite, 3/4 of the plant turned brown. I recall that this is a fern. So anyway the whatever-it-is is up to the top again and it's time to prune. I would like to get it less bushy, and it would be a shame if I had to cut whole fronds so as not to get the result I got when I got out the trimming shears.

Can you help?
Thanks.

If it is branching out with runners or offsets on the tips of the fronds I would detach those and throw away the mother plant. (There are a couple of species of these floating ferns, and I am not sure which ones reproduce which way- they do get large, though!)

If it has not yet started that, then just snip off one frond and see how it is, then another... Don't give it too big a trim at one time.
