an unanswered question about HC

Hey all, I have a question about HC that I have been unable to find an answer on.

I would like to know what the absolute minimum substrate depth would be for growing HC. I'm setting up an ADA 45f for a betta tank and am trying to maximize vertical space. I've discussed this with a few people that seem to think that 3/4 inch is what I'm looking at but was hoping that I could get a little more insight.

Thanks in advance!

The roots only go down about 1/2 inch at most. Truthfully you could probably grow it in less, but the issue you are going to encounter is how easily that little bit of substrate can move. It will be hard to grow it in with the substrate so readily moveable. I don't foresee an issue with a fully carpeted substrate of about 3/8" depth, but how easily you can get that grow to successful come about will be in question.

3/4" to 1" will be fine. If you're going to do a 45F and a shallow substrate, I suggest you use all powder type soil. It will make the HC root much easier as well.

I really wanted to work with 1/2" for the shallow part of my substrate. Thanks for the suggestion on the powder type. I do in fact have a bag of that ready to go. I figure if planting is difficult I can always sprinkle some on top of the hc as opposed to fighting with pressing it in.
