I had a similar experience earlier this week. I've got a 10g on the top shelf of my aquarium rack, and a 20g below it. The 20g's hob sticks out maybe 1/2" off the shelf. The 20g is currently cycling, so it's just plants, no fish.
I was sitting at my computer and glanced over at the racks, and saw some movement in the 20g. I dash over and look closer, and it's one of my white cloud minnows! He somehow managed to get out of the 10g on top, and get into the 20g bellow.
While he could have managed to hit that 1/2" of ledge and then flop into the tank instead of onto the ground, I'm convinced that he actually hit the ground and one of my cats saved him. I've been holding her up to the 10g tank lately so she can watch (she has no interest in fishing, just watching). Since both options have such astronomical odds, I'm sticking with the cat option!
Either way, fishy hadn't been in there long (the tank had been confirmed empty 20 minutes prior), so I was able to get him out quickly enough that no major damage was done.
