The Killing Fields

So um, I am the type of person who guides flies out the door rather than swatting them.

And I rarely kill Mosquitos. Ticks and fleas are another matter. I slay them without guilt.

So the thought of h aving to cull snails and shrimps squicks me.

Dogfish has told me that putting excess snails in the freezer is the humane thing to do.

Anyone else h ave favorite methods of culling?

Am hoping my betta girls will be good about eating shrimp lets in the future.

When I finally get shrimp. Like, in November.

I squish snails against the side of the tank. Very satisfying - like killing a cockroach.

Feeding shrimp to fish works and acquiring assasin snails works, too.

im pretty sure the most humane way to kill most anything is to squash it with something bigger fast. BTW WHO DOESNT KILL MOSQUITOS ?! Ive heard excel works but it that really faster then just killing it? Unless your so squeamish to kill a snail. shrimps. dunno but squashing them seems like a good idea too.

Do the assassin snails then breed like crazy and I need to kill them, too?

I think fish eating shrimpers is ok somehow. Circle of life as dogfish says.

I got into not killing Mosquitos bc one of my best friends from living in Japan is a Buddhist.

Non violence and all that. So generally I only kill 1 of 10 Mosquitos that bite me.

It's interesting how one's friends influence once's choices!

Smash them? No. Hit them as hard as you can when they are still in flight. It's like a bird on the radiator grill... SPLAT.

So I need local carnivorous fish owner friends.

Can you imagine the Craigslist ad for that?

Squash the snails and let the shrimps have a free meal. Sell or give away the shrimps you don't want.
