Lighting setup for a planted discus tank?
HI I am kind of new to setting up planted tanks and I have found some trouble with finding the correct lighting fixture for the set up I have. I have a 30 gal marine land tank cube tank - 20x18x20 and I am planning on putting a few discus in the tank along with plants - I know that discus will not respond well to extremely bright lights - it will probably just make them hide - the problem is many of the t5 fixtures do not fit this tank -most start at 24" and those that do fit are HO at 10000k and have actinic - I was a little weary going along with these because of the HO - I know I can probably change the actinics to a freshwater bulb. Also, even many of these like the NOVA extremes are only 2 bulb fixtures which may be insufficient light coverage. I was also turned off to using a led fixture - many people have told me that they are no good for plants. But I read a thread in the forum that broke down led lighting and found a Kessil A150W Special Blend LED Aquarium Light on aquacave.com which puts out 6700k - I thinking this would be sufficient but am still weary of using this because of the bad rap I have heard about led lighting for plants.
Can anyone suggest a light that would be sufficient in light for plants but not overkill for the discus? - Is the led lighting ok or should I go with something like a T5 HO by Nova or aquatic life? Thanks - for any information...
