2 guppies with dropsy

Today I tore down my tank to change from PFS to eco-complete and black sand mix and upgrade the filter from an eheim easy 80 to 2217, while doing so I found a male and female guppy very fat.
I thought maybe they were just well fed and she was pregnant. But after taking them both out and putting them in separate containers I found that they both had the pinecone look.
The female looked fine other then the pine coning so I thought maybe she was just pregnant. But by then end of the day both had died.
I've never kept guppies before, I only added 4 to my tank for a splash of color. Is this a common illness? All my other fish look great! Water is perfect.

46 Bow Front Planted
Eheim 2217 & 2236, 2-39wt T5 bulbs (10,000), 72-75*
Pristella tetras, cardinal tetra, amano shirmp, bamboo shrimp, nerite snails, assassin snails and red cherry shrimp.

it's probably just bad stock. i wouldn't call dropsy common, but i wouldn't call it uncommon either. it's not an illness in and of itself, but more a symptom. sometimes it's contagious, so just keep an eye on your other fish.

I've had them for 3-4 weeks, so I was assuming it was something I did wrong and not the LFS?

My guppies tend to get dropsy sometimes when they are old. They were probably bad stock.

I hate to sound mean, but I needed to "thin the herd" anyway. I never expected all 10 of the cardinals to live, I was hoping for 5 or 6. I just pray that more fish do not get sick. The other 2 guppies look just fine. Strange thing is the female was eating and swimming around just minutes before she died.
