Is freshwater and saltwater bacteria the same?

I have an Aquaclear HOB filter and I keep the sponge floating in my saltwater set up. If I take that sponge and put it in the Aquaclear and hang it on a new tank would I still need to cycle or would I already have the bacteria I need?
