Seeding and cycling aquarium

One of the ways I heard is the best for seeding and helping the cycling of a new aquarium is to add gravel from a healthy, running aquarium but do I hang the old gravel in a pouch near the filter output or do I let it stay on the new gravel floor? Thanks to all - it has been a while since a started up a new tank.

Hello A...

You can do either. As long as the gravel is in the new tank water, the good bacteria living on the surfaces will multiply and use the ammonia and eventually, the nitrites.

Just remember, there are no bacteria that use nitrates. Those are routinely removed with large, frequent water changes. But, you can remove most of the nitrates by emersing Chinese Evergreen plants in the tank.
