Is this normal?

As an experiment, I wanted to see how long my 10g could go without a water change. Usually I do a weekly water change, but it's been three weeks since I've done one. I tested the water and have <20ppm of nitrates. The tank is well planted and fill with nitrate suckers (floaters, wisteria, etc...)...is it normal for me to only have to do a water change ~monthly in these conditions?

Nitrate might be "OK", but alkanity and free micronutrients which affect overall redox of tank might be significantly affected if you're not dosing.

There might be colonies of undesired pathogens in tank also.

So 20-50% weekly water change is consistent good practice especially for tanks less than 30g

That's exactly what I was curious about. Thanks!
