Mine is like over 100 gallon rule (though my biggest is only 25). I'm on the bottom floor though so I don't think it matters as much. If you're on a 2nd+ floor maybe they're worried about the weight. 10 gallons only is ridiculous, just do what you want.

I think with apartments it's probably best not to go too big because you may move more frequently than if you owned your place.

I've only ever gotten 3 answers when I've asked.

1. Pay the rent on time.
2. Pay the rent on time.
3. Don't get something huge.

I was told by a manager once that the "no water filled furniture" rule you see on contracts was meant for water beds, and fish tanks were under the pet policy.

I would try to keep them as small as you can afford to store an appropriately sized quarantine tank for all of your stock for 3+ weeks in the event of a move/rescape. I also wouldn't get anything I couldn't move myself, as I tend to move the furniture around for a week or two until I get settled.

Obviously, your milage may vary.

Mine hasn't specified When I replied to the ad (it said no pets) I told my landlord I have a cat (didn't have fish back then). He must have liked me b/c he made the exception. Then I got into fish and had my first tank (29 gal) for about 6 months before I told him about it (figured it would be better than him having see it on his own). He said it was fine, it's my apartment and I need to enjoy it. I then got a betta tank (was a 5 gal but upgraded to 10 now) which he still doesn't know about. I also upgraded from the 29 to a 40 which he doesn't know about I'd love to get something larger but I"m on 3rd FL and I'm paranoid as it is lol

The apartment complex I was in back in 03 stated a 20g limit in the lease but I had a 55 setup. It also depends on what floor your on and where you plan to put it. I had my 55 setup on the perimeter of my entrance which was in a breeze way so there was more support there. I was never told to take it down by the complex though.

Mine was nothing more than 20 gallons unless you asked, but pretty much meant unless you lived downstairs

Is it in the lease agreement? If not then you are fine. I've never even asked mine if they a have limit. They know I have four up and running, I told them. They thought it was cool until I told them I have a shrimp tank, then they looked at me funny and the conversation died lol.
