Ammonia Question

I just set my new 20H tank up a few days ago, and I have decided to do a fish less cycle. The only ammonia I can find is walmart's Great Value brand ammonia. The ingredients are ammonium hydroxide and surfactant, and it says it contains no phosphorus. Is this safe to use? Also, just a noob question, is this method safe for plants?

it should be okay if it doesn't have a scent, i don't think surfactant should be an issue but PLEASE someone correct me if i'm wrong

That is not safe to use. surfactant is like soap. find an ace hardware or buy ammonium chloride online

I didn't even notice you were from Indy! Good to see someone else in Indiana. I'm up in fishers. I live right next to an ace and didn't even think about checking there.

What made you decide to use ammonia to start the cycle? I've never heard of this being done. I always used bacteria supplements, or just throw fish food in to the cycle. Just wondering.

Its pretty common these days and the better way to start a tank. You can still use your bacterial starter to speed things up.
