2 Oscars in a 20Gal!

I was just at somebody's house. They had a pair of oscars in a 20 gal. I felt really bad for the fish, but I wasn't in a position to be able to say anything negative about it. The owner said that she keeps the light off all the time because they fight if she turns the light on. Also, she said that they fight at night.

Anyways... it was really sad. I just couldn't say anything due to the situation that I was in....

I feel like you could have offered advice since they mentioned the problems they were having with aggression. They set you up, you didn't have to be mean and tell them they were horrible, but a friendly suggestion is usually appreciated. Why don't people look up the species they buy? Even after they buy them when they are having trouble with them? I just don't get it. If you can I would try to contact them and offer to take one of them or something.....even if you can't keep it.

You could mention something like larger fish tanks (I don't know how much 2 oscars need, 60 gallons?) are relatively cheap now and that it would help them not fight as much. Maybe even mention prices like petco has a dollar per gallon sale or something not that daunting. Just be more pro-fish to make them healthier rather than negative comments about their fish keeping skills.

I keep my eyes closed because I don't want to see what's going on around me...

You definitely need to offer some friendly advice there!

Once saw an oscar and a large pleco in a 16 gallon bowfront. I tried to offer the owners a little friendly advice, but I doubt they listened. And why should they? As far as they were concerned, the fish were doing fine --they'd been in that tank for years.

It must be just me that "googles" everything in life ! Had that been me and my fish were fighting I would have googled "oscars fighting in 20 gallon aquarium" the answer would have popped up a thousand times ! I just get the ignorance of some people.
