How big are your water changes?

I've noticed a lot of comments regarding the size of water changes, and so I was curious as to what most people are doing.

When you do a water change, how much water do you normally change out?

I used to do 50% weekly, when I was doing EI by the recipe. I have since cut way back on the amount of fertilizer and cut way back on the water changes. I will still do large water changes, but much less frequently. Smaller ones are the norm, though. Just enough to get enough water to clean the filter. Roughly 25% every few weeks.

Very much depends on why I'm changing water. For normal- 25%. When catching fish or to make changes in the water quality, I may go for 75%. When fish are selling well, I may change out 25% three times in the same day.

Depends on what kind of tank.

20% weekly for shrimp tanks

70% for my 95G whenever I feel like it. Mostly every 3-4 weeks since I'm dosing PPS-Pro

I shoot for 50%, but will often change out more since it's not a perfect measurement. I'd rather do more than less. For special purposes, I will do even larger water changes, but never smaller.

When I was active on this board a few years back, 50% water changes was the standard. I don't remember people balking at the idea of doing large water changes. However, after returning to the board from an absence, I'm finding more and more people seemingly afraid of large water changes. This shift in thinking seems odd to me.

So I was wondering if this was an overall shift in tank care.

This community goes through fads all the time. You see it with everything from drop checkers to shrimp.

Weekly, I usually do 30% or so on non co2 tanks. 50% or more on my EI tank. I like lot's of water changes. Everything seems to be healthier to me, just like people and fresh air. I don't like to do large water changes (80%) on tanks that don't normally get lot's of big water changes as the params bounce around a lot.

I do 50% water changes and often more than once a week. The tank seems cleaner when I do this.

30% every week. On the 4th week I do almost 100% as a reset. I use Rootmedic ultimate dose for 200 gallons in the 125 and almost everything is growing like a weed except my Lobelia cardinalis It's just been slowly dieing since It was planted.

The poll is really interesting. So far, it is virtual tie between all amounts from 10% through 70%, indicating that there is no single consensus of how much water to change. I had not expected this.

I think it highly depends on the what kind I tank you have.

With EI people will do larger water changes, PPS-Pro little, no or large water changes or if it's a shrimp tank they'll also have small water changes.

i change 1.5g on my 11.4g red rili/super tiger shrimp tank every saturday morning, however, due to the substrate and rocks, the tank is probably closer to 9.5g or so.
