GH / KH questions

I just got a GH / KH API test kit and tested my tap H2O, water in my 20L and 29.

Tap GH is 4 degress or 71.6ppm
Tap KH is 2 degrees or 35.8ppm

20L GH is 5 degrees or 89.5ppm
20L KH is 4 degrees or 71.6ppm

29 GH is 5 degrees or 89.5ppm
29 KH is 3 degrees or 53.7ppm

I am getting ready to do a major reset of both tanks due to getting a ton of plant clippings from a local Atlanta aquarist and will be changing 80% of the pea gravel out in the 20L to 80% Flourite / 20% pea gravel. I will be changing out 20% of the gravel / flourite mix in the 29 and adding more flourite to the mix.

My question(s);
- first the obvious, what do these numbers mean?
- second, should I be raising / lowering either the GH or KH to keep tropical fish and live plants (no CO2)?
- thrid, how should I go about raising / lowering the GH or KH?
- fourth, since I will be doing this major reset and water change should I disregard the above tank numbers and retest after the reset and new water addition. (I plan on using some of the old water to keep the fish from completely freaking out) about 10GL from each tank.

If you have need of any other information from me please post or IM and I will get that to you ASAP.

thanks,
Mark

Water seems fine, you only really need to compare these parameters if you have a heavily planted established tank that is not thriving because of lacking carbonic acid (DIY CO2?)

Naturally decomposing leaves and detrius & mulm increase it naturally with tank aging. Malaysian trumpet snails and other diverse critters help it along also.

The more important question is probably what are your planted tank setup goals (fish & fauna, preferably fauna first)?

Your numbers look good. I wouldn't worry about saving water, just acclimate them as if you are putting them in the tank for the first time. I like to drip with airline tubing, but that's just me.

ha! wish I had your water.
mixing RO here to get 4dGH and 2dKH, having those numbers right out of the tap you're lucky (imo) do nothing but use it.

Just got an API GH/KH test kit tonight as well. Does the yellow color required in the KH test need to be a bright yellow like the 0ppm of the ammonia test or just a yellow ting? Same question for the GH test. A dark green or just a ting of green? Thanks

I have the same kit.

It will change quite dramatically from blue to yellow.

It will turn 'Yellow', meaning no blue at all.
