Get a harder sponge, don't use the soft stuff. Go to a pet store or LFS and look for the tougher sponges, ones that won't get sucked up into the intake... I found one that was actually for a turtle filter; it was a bit small but I got 2 and cut a slit through one of them so it could slide through.

It's not that the filter is gettin sucked up it's just collecting lots of gunk but i think it's because i was over-feeding and i stopped doin that last week. i've been seeing a big water quality improvement plus i think im under filtered. all i have is the marineland penguin 200 for my 40B
