Nitrate testing

I have just set up a new tank, I have dosed Seachem Nitrogen, but can't get a reading on my API nitrate test kit. Do I have to get another brand, or will no test kit read for Seachem Nitrogen?

Hi Leebee,

You are not alone......

Your test kit is probably fine, and you probably have nitrates in your tank but you may be making the same mistake I made. It drove me crazy for a week until.......see post #15 in this thread.

Let us know how it turns out.

Ah, I just re-tested after reading the instructions again( with eyes open), and got a much better result. Reading 5-10 ppm now, so looks like I'm going OK.

Hi Leebee,

Glad to help! My wife and I visited Australia in 2000 and had a great time. We visited Port Douglas, Cairns, and Sydney and would like to make it back some day.

Glad you liked it. We are thinking of going to Canada next year, and will probably fly into Seattle. Small world.

If your nitrate test kit reads 5-10 ppm you still don't know how much nitrate you have unless you have calibrated your test kit to be sure you are using it right and to be sure it works as advertised. It isn't a good idea to base fertilizer dosing on uncalibrated test kit readings.

So, how do I calibrate my test kit?

Here is one method for crudely calibrating the test kits: https://www.plantedtank.net/forums/fe...-chemists.html You don't need super accuracy, just enough accuracy to find out if the test kit works, how to use it right, and roughly what the readings actually mean.

My API kit wouldn't show any, no matter how much I shook the bottles - until I did what's suggested here: bang the bottle on a hard surface a few times, then shake it. Somehow, the reagents crystallize at the bottom of the bottle, so you really have to smash it hard.
