UV Sterilizer or not?

So I had a 15 Watt Advantage 2000+ In-Line UV Sterilizer by Aqua Ultraviolet, I broke one of the barbs off of it this past weekend, now I am trying to decide if I should even bother.

I don't know if it ever helped or not, I had it in my sump, never got ich, but still had alge. What everyone thoughts on these? I know if I get another one I won't get the same one, just wondering if others think they help before I spend 150 bucks.

THanks

The only algae issue these are good for is green water. I use UV in all of my tanks with livestock in them and have had a pretty significant decrease in deaths for all my fishes and inverts vs. the same period last year. I only have about a tenth of the mortality rate in these tanks compared to last year.

I even have duckweed in my water bong!

I agree, I have one in my big tank and I believe they are beneficial to the fish. I don't think they help with algae, only green water.

Here link to mine, water in & water out, I broke the water in one off from the main part, not sure how I would fix it as it was all molded out of one part.

After I had a bout with ich I installed the 24 watt green machine? I believe that's what its called. Green killing machine maybe? It's an inside the tank unit, which sucks. But I ended up tying a bunch of moss to it and now it just blends in with everything else.

I added one 2? maybe 3 weeks ago now. I thought my water was clear but boy after having the sterilizer in the tank I know what crystal clear is so I love mine for that.

It did not help with ick though. I accidently forgot to turn my heater back on after a water change. It got very cold that night and a week later I have a significant outbreak of ick. It also doesn't help with algae on ornaments or walls.

To me it is still worth it though for the crystal clear water and peace of mind (whether its true or not) that it will help keep other infections from taking hold.

I also have the green killing machine or whatever its called.
