UV light gizmo hype

Theres lots of talk of contact time, and distance from bulb. There are lots of brands with "twists",many of which are real expensive.Im running an Aquanetics(out of business). Its 15 years old,no major technology, a hollow 3" pvc tube with a bulb in the middle thats it.My water has been crystal clear from day one, including break in period.Ive never had ick or anything else.In my opinion its all marketing and hype.Im curios what the forum thinks.

I added a UV sterilizer about 2 weeks ago. last weekend when doing a water change I forgot to turn the heater back on and it got very cold overnight. Last night (6days later) I noticed many of my fish have ick.

So much for the uv sterilizer helping with that!

Brand is he Green Machine

With UV there are a lot of considerations. Yes, contact time and distance from the bulb are factors. An additional factor is what your trying to kill with it. It take many time the amount of UV to kill ick compared to most algaes. This is why an older more traditional unit will work just fine for algae control, but might not work for ick control.

In addition, UV can only kill what goes through it. So a parasite like ick can only be killed in the free swimming stage and then only if it goes through the UV unit.
