Keeping a Fishless Tank Cycled
I have a 150 low tech/low light/medium planted tank that has been running for a couple of months and has been cycled for a month. I have 5 shrimp, 2 nerites and a herd of pond snails in it. I have still been adding a small amount of ammonia (1/2 teaspoon daily) as I have no fish in it. I plan to add fish in a couple of months but as my travel schedule is keeping me away for too long right now I don't want to put them through quarantine until I am going to be home for most of a full month.
My question is should I continue to add ammonia to keep the tank cycled properly or will the extremely light critter load I have in there do that on their own?
