What else do I need just to grow plants

So I recently acquired a new fish tank and so far I just want to grow plants. What's the bare minimum I need to grow plants? Do I need a filter or powerhead?

It's a 20G Long and 4 30" T5 bulbs. For substrate I am looking to use MiracleGro Organic Potting Mix.

If anything I *might* throw in shrimps later on but no fish.

What kind of plants do you want to grow? Do you have any idea?

You will need something to cap the MGOPM once you put it into the tank, I suggest Black Diamond Blasting Sand if you're on a budget. A powerhead with a sponge attached will work just fine for water movement and mechanical filtration. You have the light, though I suggest you only run one of those bulbs at a time unless you are going to get Co2 if they are T5HO. If they are T5NO them probably two, maybe three of them 8-10 hours a day.

Dirt, cap, water movement, and light...you are in business for a low tech tank.

Well I think what you need depends on what type of plants you want to grow. It can probably range from very little for growing low light plants like java fern or anubias to adding CO2 and regular fertilization of macro and micro nutrients in a high light tank with lots of stem plants. I think it would help to do some research and figure out what you want to grow first. How much maintenance do you want to have to do? How heavily planted do you want it to be? These are just a few things to consider when deciding on plants you might want. I'm not really an expert, but in my personal experience, figuring those things out would have helped me with my initial setup. I started with fish first, then wanted to add a couple live plants so I picked up a couple at petco (bad idea). When they weren't doing well, I started doing more research and found out what I was doing wrong and before you know it I was hooked and sucked into this world of planted aquaria. Now I have a high light setup with pressurized CO2 injection and strict fertilization schedule of macro and micronutrients on a very heavily planted 30 gallon. So I would just suggest figuring out what you want to do before actually getting anything. That's just my suggestion though.

Thanks! That's what I was thinking too.
