Fishless cycling - no spikes?

I started cycling my Fluval Spec (2 gallons) 2 days ago, but I threw the biomax bag that came with the kit into an established filter a couple of days before. After starting the tank, I put about 1/4 of a crush up bottom feeder pellet (to a powder consistency - each pellet is about 1cm in diameter) every 12 hours, so 1/2 a pellet a day. So far, I've been reading 0ppm ammonia, 0ppm nitrite and 0 - 20ppm nitrate. Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to add more fish food each time?

What substrate are you using? My tank was developed in a week.

I never used the plant stratum. Got a bag but throw them away. I got the shrimp stratum and mine reading was always 0-0.25 ammonia 0 nitrite and 0 nitrate. If you got some nitrate that means you got good bacteria in there already. I will wait for a week before adding fish. You don't have to change the water if it is 0 ammonia. ALSO, make sure your test kit is up to date.

I seems to me that such a tiny aquarium would need hardly any bacteria at all to get going and you started the tank cycled by doing this - by all accounts you could have put the filter media into the established filter first snd then just started without a fishless cycle - I have never wasted time cycling a tank when I already had bacteria to start it cycled.
