Help with new tank

Hello everyone, After having my betta in a 1 gal for a week or so I have decided to upgrade his tank and get planting. I found a pretty decent deal on an aqueon evolve 4 gal and I have to say im pretty impressed with the product. As everyone knows, the flow from the stock pump is far too much for a betta, so one must modify. I have searched the web but there is not much information available. From what I have gathered people are stuffing aquaclear foam inserts into the tube which connects the pump to the outflow. My question is should I punch a whole in the tube below where I stuffed the foam so it will not stress the pump? My second question is concerning eco-complete substrate. I was wondering how long I should wait before adding my betta and the plants I currently have to the tank. Thanks for any help

First off let me state that I'm not real familiar with this particular piece of equipment. That said, restricting of pumps, for whatever reason, is fairly common. As long as it's done on the output side of things, most all pumps are fine with it. They are magnetically driven, it's not like there are gears or anything to stress out. Short answer, I'm sure that will be fine without you modifying it. Plus you never know, after the tank grows in a bit you may wish you had all that flow back. I permanently modify equipment only as a last resort.

I don't see any issue adding your plants immediately to the new setup. Matter of fact, I recommend it. An argument could be made for waiting on the tank to cycle a bit before dropping in the Betta, however, me personally...I'd toss him him in as soon as you condition the water. Bettas live in terrible conditions, they are tough and breath air half the time. I would keep and eye on things and change out some of the water every other day for the first week or two though.

Thanks for the reply. I was hesitant to poke a hole in the pipe connecting the pump to the outflow so Im glad to hear it probably wont affect the pump. I would imagine its kinda like adding more head? I have alot of work to do tonight but I will be adding him tomorrow most likely.

I'm 99% sure the pump will be fine. Yea, ultimately more head pressure.

As far as the fish goes...like I said, water changes.
