Nerites

Just recieved my snails. Spent 2 hrs acclimating them. Put them in my tank and now 8 or 9 are on there backs...some hanging out, some clammed up.

Whats the deal? Are they dead/dieing?

Ack, that's not good. What are your water parameters?? Never had that happen and I have a bunch in all my tanks.

how long have they been in there? also, hope you like eggs. I'm totally getting rid of my zebra nerites due to unending egg spamming all over my driftwood and tank walls.

I would give them overnight before you really worry. Also, set them uprigth on the substrate. Shipping is stressful in the best of conditions, make things easy for them.

I would make sure they are all upright & just give them time.

I had the damn eggs all over till one (only had 2) of mine died.

Now I only have 1 & I'm very happy. I think they're really cool looking & love watching them zoom along the glass chomping away.

You can sex them...males ride females...just keep them seperated and you wont have eggs.

so only the females lay eggs? I had 2 zebra nerites, constantly had eggs, gave 1 to a friend and within a week he had eggs as well... is it safe to assume I gave him the female and I now have the male? also that the female will stop laying eggs at some point?

Well it has been 4 days and 12 of my 16 nerites have not moved. I was told that it could take up to a week for them to get used to my conditions. What do you think? Seems like a long time to me. I just checked, and all the snails seem to have the foot still in place and they don't stink.

Any thoughts?

Smell them. If they're dead they will stink very bad.

It is official. 12 nerites dead and 5 get out of the water as soon as they can. What is causing them to die? I have tested my water and everything looks good. I dont understand! Would my fert dosing kill them?

What kind of nerites did you get? Some sp. (found in FL) are strictly marine.

im assuming nerites are susceptible too, but arent snails very sensitive to copper? cant remember if it counts for them along with shrimp. if they are, maybe check to see whats in fish foods or if you have copper piping
