What's this on my driftwood??

I noticed several black 'balls' on my driftwood that has been in my tank since last December. What are they?

There were white fluffs on my driftwood too a few days ago, and some turned grey. I'm perplexed...

The driftwood is kinda big and there are plants attached to it, so it very inconvinient..I think i would try the hydrogen peroxide route, crossing my fingers that no shrimps will perish in the process.

Hydrogen peroxide isn't bad, JuSt don't go over 2ml per gallon and spot treat, get a syringe and turn off any current and spot treat the algea you don't have to use all of the peroxide. just enough to spot treat it

Spot treat with Hydrogen peroxide. It is a lot cheaper than excel and works great.

Agreed with hydrogen peroxide. I've used it a lot for various reasons. No big deal. I've gone as high as 5 ml per gallon with discus. You'll be fine spot treating

Excel worked great for me. I spot treated the affected areas with a syringe and turned off my filters so there's no flow. It turned pinkish in 2-3 days then turned gray.

Image-google "black brush algae," then see if you still have that question.
