Light Time Schedule

Its upsetting that after I put in alot of time in my tank, I dont usually get to see it often with the lights on. I turn on the co2 when I leave for work at 730. The lights come on at 1130. Its a race against the clock to get home to feed the fish before the lights go off at 530. Not to mention the waste of c02 with the 3 hour delay between co2 on and lights on.

This is what I came up with....any one see any problems?

Turn co2 on at 730
lights on at 1030-130
lights out 130-330
lights on at 330-630.

That will at least give me an extra hour of tank enjoyment!

Why not set your timers to have the light and CO2 on when you are home in the evening. I have a tank in the room where I spend my evenings and I have the lights come on a 3 pm and go out at 11 pm. Plants are growing great, and it doesn't bother the fish, and I get to enjoy the tank in the evening.

Yes, adjust your lights for when you are there to view the tank. My lights run from 2 to 10 pm and the CO2 runs from 1 to 9 pm.

Yea, I would do what Touch of Sky said. 6pm is high noon for my fish. I have two seperate lights, #1 (5500k) comes on at 2pm, #2 (6500k) kick on at 3pm. #2 turns off at 9pm, then #1 shuts down at 10pm, sometimes 11 or 12 if I'm actively veiwing that late.

+1 noon to ten. Haven't heard any complaints yet. And I remember reading in one of the ADG threads that plants are photosynthetically (real word?) active for 10 hours. So unless you have algae issues with 10 I'd go for that.

2 bulbs per switch (4 bulbs total all 6500k)

9am two lights come on
2pm other two lights on (4 bulb blast for an hour)
3pm first set of lights go out
9pm lights out

EI dosing weekly, DIY co2 (5 two litre bottles with a power head as diffuser) zero algae and great plant growth

That's a long cycle! Is this on your 125? I wonder if I'm selling myself short with an 8 hour cycle.

Thanks for the advice! The only thing that might hinder changing the lights to the evening is that my co2 is not on a solenoid, I need to turn it on manually. So should I still turn it on at 7 in the morning if I adjust my lights to lets say 3-9? (yes, I cut it down to 6 hours with my 2x24 watt t-5 due to some algae issues, stay tuned for a thread on that!)

Buy a solenoid?

My lights are on from 4pm - 11pm, the CO2 is on, I think, from 2pm - 10pm. Works for me because I get a few hours to enjoy it while home in the evening. One day I'll get around to buying a digital timer for the CO2 (already got one for the lights), so I can run a different time on the weekend as I'm home at different times.

Many folks run their CO2 24/7 - at a slightly lower level perhaps. Some even add some sort of surface agitation/circulation at night to degas some of the gas. Turning the CO2 on manually sounds very inconvenient, and will lead to issues due to fluctuating levels. Investing into a solenoid sounds like the better solution.

This is your tank you should get to enjoy it... Just put it on for 10-11 hrs, it doesn't have to start super early. Make it so you get home and it's on for a few hours. I read read plants naturally know when it's 10 to 2pm where they photosynethsize the most so try to have it on by that time

When my solenoid was broken, I turned on the CO2 in the morning and ran an airstone on a timer until a couple hours before the lights were scheduled to come on (to keep from gassing the fish) and then had the lights on according to their usual 3pm to 11pm schedule.

You'll waste a bit of CO2, but that's a small price to pay in order to actually enjoy your tank!

You only have 6 hours of lights. You still have extra 6 hours.
