Question Filter supplements like renew, Nitrazorb, or Charcoal

My tank is probably about two years old. I get a bit of oily surface scum every once in a while, not much, and it goes away and comes back. I was wondering about using a product like Renew, or Nitra zorb or plain charcoal (on a rare occasion) to help remove these dissolved organics and flush the system a little beyond the regular water change. Someone posted they liked this product for the same. http://www.microbelift.com/newhomeaquarium.html

Any suggestions or experience with these products or this idea? I'm looking for any suggestions. Thanks, bob

All you need is surface agitation, it will break up the film. You could adjust your spray bar or powerheads or just get a molly/platy or two and that should solve your problem

Thanks. I have a couple Swordtale guys and they do break it up. But I'm more curious if any have used any of these products with success to give the tank an extra clean-up. I don't vac at all and plant growth is great. I have used Nitrazorb once as part of a green water cure, which worked. I have since retired it.

But I'm wondering if I might throw it in the can for a few days to clean out excess funk or if the other products like renew might help. TIA. bob
