Cat Drinking Tank Water

This is a silly topic but man my cat just loves drinking the aquarium tank water. It must be because it's moving and probably has some taste.

Anyone else have the same problem?

I know it can't be good for the cat or the tank so I'm going to start building my tank lid right away.

It can be lethal for the critters in the tank if you use any form of topical flea prevention.

its most likely because the water is moving. cats are naturally drawn to moving water because stagnant water = diseased/contaminated water in the wild.

maybe look into purchasing a water fountain for your cat to redirect his/her natural instincts? mine has a water fountain and will only attempt to drink from aquariums if his water fountain is low/dirty.

Not to mention, cats have incredibly dangerous Pasteurella bacteria in their saliva, and other places. It is lethal to birds, so I can only imagine it isn't good for your fish either.

Found my cat doing the same thing last night. I think it was pretty funny.

I second the warning about topical flea medication on the cats.

I had something weird going wrong with my tank at one point, almost lost a cory and all the fish were unhappy, turned out that my cat had been jumping on top of the covered fish tank and sticking its paw through the hole on the back of the lid where the wires from the powerhead and lights etch comes through and trying to catch the fish.

I blocked the hole off, ran some carbon and did biggish waterchanges frequently for a while and everyone recovered, including the cory I was sure was a goner

My cats can't get to any of my tanks which is intentional for their safety and the safety of the tanks. But, I often leave buckets of water with plants or growout tanks where they can get at the water and they love to drink from there. With no fish or chemicals in these tanks/buckets I don't really care.

RAGDOLL.

my cats have no interest in my tanks, whatsoever. If I caught one of ours drinking out of one of the tanks, I would dunk there head in...

..followed by a water change.

My cat doesn't want to drink water out of a bowl, she only drinks out of my shrimp tank. She does this for 4-5 months now, it doesn't bother me and neither do the shrimp care.
