my DIY suface skum extractor/filter closed loop system

Hello all
I suppose I should start off by asking just how much water turns one really wants in a planted tank ?
what I have and what I have done to this point is take this skimmer box along with a few feet of black tubing, hooked it up to a MJ1200, the tubing feeds from the overflow side of the skimmer box into the outlet side of the box like a U tube and shoots straight down into the sudstrate, where I have it conected to a T-barb that shoots the tubing to the front corners of the tank, the black tubing is covered with EC so all you can see is just the very ends of the tubing sticking out, I suppose what I have made is a surface scum extractor and closed loop system in one, I also plan on hooking up my DIY Co2 system to this as well, now by the time you factor in all the head loss I have not much water turns at all, I do not have any type of filter hooked up to this tank outside this filter sponge I cut to fit in the skimmer box,
Now my DIY suface skum extractor/filter closed loop system is working great really, but should I maybe add a small power head like maybe a MJ400 or 600 ?
thanks again -James
