Please Help Me Shop For A Nano Tank Christmas Gift!

Hello,

My son loves planted aquariums. He has a beautiful 55 gallon with CO2 and all the do-dads. He has mentioned wanting to get a small rimless tank. I want to make that dream come true this Christmas but I don't know what to get. My total budget is $300.

I've done some research and I think the tanks at AquaForest are lovely.

I'm considering the Cube Garden mini medium

Or the Cube Garden 30c

http://www.adana-usa.com/index.php?m...roducts_id=191

I know that I need to get him special lights, a heater, and some kind of filter. I want everything to look nice. He really doesn't like having obvious equipment in the tank.

I want to start ordering things quickly so that it is all here on Christmas morning.

Thanks for reading this. I hope to hear back soon.

Yes, the ADA mini M is no doubt a beautiful tank. But you would have to do lots of shopping for everything else. Does he keep shrimp? The fluval Ebi is very moderately priced and comes with everything to keep shrimp. Even if he doesn't keep them now, run it by him. We all love shrimp!

How old is your son? I assume he's a teenager or older because he's already maintaining a pretty large tank himself. Me, personally, I think a lot of the joy in this hobby is setting up the tank and purchasing all the things yourself. Weighing out all the options and seeing the different tank ideas is all part of the fun. If you're set on getting him a tank, an ADA one would be top of the line -- but at least if it were me I would rather get a gift card for such a thing so he can enjoy picking out the tank and doing all that himself.

$300 is a really good amount -- for a mini tank you should be able to get almost everything for that price including the tank, substrate, lighting, and some for plants. CO2 (depending what you get) would be a hundred or over so that might be a little extra.

Of those two I would go with the 30c, IMO it has much more scaping potential than the Mini M. For the filter you could get an Eheim 2213 or 2215 with the appropriately sized lily pipes. For lighting I would recommend the Archaea 27watt compact fluorescent. If somebody were to buy me a nano set-up this is what I would want. You can leave the substrate up to him, but since you're ordering from aquaforest anyway you might as well pick up a bag of Amazonia "New", its pretty much the best plant substrate out there IMO.
