goldfish, snails, and shrimp-- oh my.

Do any of you have any wisdom to share or experience with keeping nerites, amanos, and/or fiddler crabs with fancy goldfish?

Here's my situation.

Right now my tank has only plants and no algae. Brand new. 56 gallons. Aquasoil substrate.

I have not yet gotten the goldfish.

My hypothesis us that if I introduce large shrimp and snails first, and then small goldfish, that would be the best way to go. However, since I have no algae yet, would the algae-eaters starve in a brand new tank?

Can any of these critters coexist with goldfish?

I have one nerite that I put in my goldfish tank a couple of days ago and they ignore it, they also ignore the one pond snail that's in there too. But....every fish is different!

The best approach would be to try to get/ only use snails bigger than their mouths!

I had nerites with my (small comet) goldfish; he didn't eat them, but they eventually died. I'm wondering if it's because my tank isn't heated, so that might be a concern.

I also had Amanos in there until he got big enough to eat them. They spent most of their time chillin under the driftwood, but they lived there for 2 years before he ate them.

So nerites should be okay if they're happy in your tank, and Amanos should be okay at least for a while.

Buy some algae wafers and give them one every couple of days; if they don't eat them they're probably finding food elsewhere. Your goldfish will also enjoy algae wafers if you break them into small pieces.

Joy to the fishes!
