Does algae cycle?

...currently, we do very little glass cleaning, and there seems to be very little growth of any algae anywhere; but it's still there, just little patches here-and-there.

Since we have had our 29 gallon in operation (Feb. 2011) it seems like there have been times when algae was more prevolent than others: especially during the summer, spyro gyra in particular.

Does algae have "high" and "low" times of activity, or does it just take us 9 months to figure-out how to manage algae?

...it's about the fish.

Is your tank placement near a window? It could also be related to higher organics / wc frequency. It is common for new tanks to go through changes until a balance is established.

...no window, in a sun-free corner.

Oh yeah, and during the summer we are away from home a lot; so, we slip away from EI; once, we even went 21 days between water changes; now, we are back to weekly, maybe that's why the algae is gone?

...it's about the fish.
