Except for rare situations an activated carbon filter insert is pointless. Except for even rarer situations, none that I know of, an ammonia remover insert is pointless. All of this is for planted tanks, of course. All you need in a filter is something to remove particulates, and a bio media, which can be the same as the particulate removing media.

The bio max is a media for your bacteria to grow on. It is not ment to be a particulate filter. As Hoppy said, your bacteria will also grow on the sponge insert. The bio max is not absolutely nessesary but i recomend you use it if you already have it.

You can remove the discoloration from leaching tannins with activated carbon, but you need to change the carbon often, because it soon becomes ineffective. Activated carbon filtration does no harm.
