My tank had some sword leaves that had turned white and puffy. I assumed they were dead and moldy, but when I went to pick one, I discovered that it was actually encrusted in some sort of hard, almost coral-like substance.

Does anybody know what this is? Bryozoans seem to be the only thing I can find on a search that might fit, but it's not slimy at all.

And what are the implications for my tank? Is this neutral from the standpoint of the fish?

Looks like a freshwater sponge. They're harmless but may die off due to not enough food.

Sponge does seem to fit, or at least it certainly looks a like the one at .

Is there a way to tell if it is still alive? Since it grew to this point (and there are several other pieces in the tank) from nothing, presumably I had parameters it liked at some point. My heater was off in the tank for a while, so I wonder if that had something to do with it, especially if I picked it up from a local stream.
