Ants colonized my filter!
I just spent the last 3 hours cleaning up tons of ants from inside my aquarium cabinet. At first I was really worried that they were carpenter ants and my stand might be damaged, but they are a non wood burrowing species I have seen before in my house, little sugar eating ants. My kitchen was infested with them this summer when I left a drop of grape jelly on the counter top.
Now they are back and went inside one of my eheim 2213s and colonized the motor housing. When I disturbed the filter to clean it the ants scattered everywhere! I washed the filter in the sink and so many ants came out and went down the drain. They had eggs and larvae and everything.
I dont understand why they would want to live in the motor housing. Its all plastic, theres no food there, they cant burrow or make tunnels..
Has anyone ever had this happen?
