will I kill it?

I have some water sprite in my 29, and would like to let it float at the surface of the water. it has a clump of roots that attaches a few stems together. I was wondering if I could cut this off to separate the stems- would it harm the plant? I'm a little unclear at to whether these are stem plants, or what?

You can and you will have more plants. Its not harmful to the plant they just have to make new roots.

Yes, water sprite is a stem plant.

And yes, you can cut the root ball. It will recover faster if you leave some roots attached, but in general, trimming stems and replanting the tops of them w/o any roots is safe, so I don't see how doing this could kill it.
