Water Changes

Sorry - this is probably a ridiculously basic question, but I'm new to tanks and to planted aquariums.

Water changes - I mean, basically they're done to maintain good water quality, right? So if my testing kit reads ammonia, nitrites and nitrates all as zero... then is a 'weekly water change' actually necessary? I'm using the API master test kit - so in theory I should be getting pretty accurate readings!

Weekly water changes are the preferred method. It's a big mistake to think that just because you get normal readings from your test kits you can skip water changes. Test kits can only measure a few parameters. They do not measure all the other factors in your water.

As for API test kits, they are OK, but there are much better test kits available. That comes down to how much money do you want to spend.
