how much does it weigh?

i have a book shelf (from ikea, expidit only 2 rows thick) that i would like to put my tank on. i am planning to lay the shelf on its side and put my ~ 32 gallon tank on it.

i will be using soil capped with play sand if that makes any difference to the weight.

so, how much will the tank weigh? anyone with this shelf with a tank on it?

thanks!

1 Lt water is 1KG . So to play safe calculate the vol in ltr and add 10% to 15%.
if the shelf is made of pine or solid wood (not particle board) it should have a weight limit posted on the ikea site.

EDIT:
just re read and saw you plan to use the shelf in a way it was not designed to support weight i would expect it to fail.

it may be better to DIY a stand for the tank.

~280 lbs for water alone. Calculate the glass and substrate and it can easily reach 300. Id be careful based on what the shelf is made of

thanks. it is particle board. their site says each shelf supports 29 lb but not what the whole thing will support. i don't know. i may have to change up the shelf i already had made for my 20 gallon. it is made of 2x4 and plywood, no problems with the weight there...

but, it would look so much nicer in my bedroom if we just had the ikea shelf in there... i wonder if there is anyway i can support the shelf. hmmmmm.

i am estimating the tank will be at least 320 or so filled. i sent an email to ikea to see what they think. i am sure they will say no.

i am also sure they will say no as the shelf is only able to support 29 Lb per shelf total 87Lb nowhere near what you need (320Lb to 350Lb)
