Rainbows in a 36 inch tank.

I currently have 55 gallon tank and more than a few rainbows. I live in a small house that is about to get smaller with another baby on the way. Currently the tank is in my daughter's room on the only wall big enough for a 4 foot tank that isn't under a big window. We need to make some room in her room for the new baby and I have a friend with an empty 65 gallon tank and at 3 feet wide could be placed in a better spot in the house and would be a deeper tank for planting. Do you think the rainbows would be alright with the smaller swimming distance?

Yes - 40 gallon breeder tanks (36x18x16) are commonly used to house 'bow breeding groups.

Just remember that a tank height of 24 5/8 inches will require real good lighting to penetrate to the substrate.

Thanks! The 55 is a low tech right now with a T5NO strip. I was going to use a 24" T5HO fixture I have. It will extend out and fit the 36" tank. I won't be doing anything crazy high light, right now it's just Amazon Swords & Java Fern, but I have some HC I might add along with getting some other medium light easy plants (Vals, Sag, maybe some moss, etc.). If I do this I'll go ahead and lay down the cash for a real CO2 system.
