9w Coralife uv question

I received one of these in a trade and its already rigged into a fluval 404. The filter works great but my question is the UV sterilizer. How do I tell if the bulb needs replacing or if its even working?? Does anyone have one of these things?? Thanks

There is a plastic round see through piece on the bottom of the unit, when you plug it in you can see the purple color of the bulb coming through.

roughly 8000 hours of use from manufacturers recommendations. I would chop that back a bit since every manufacturer likes to say their product is better than it is. I replace the bulb my turbotwists bulb every 5 thousand hours of use (thats about evey 200 days of straight use 24/7) if you run it only part time just do the math on how long you run it (I keep a post it note in my fish storage room since I only use it when I need it)

Yeah the bottom piece that "should" be see through, is not. its more like a cap. i looked up the manual and it says it will illuminate in that particular area when working, but it would seem this one is different in the fact it has a plastic cap dealio. still trying to figure out if this bulbs any good!

open the case up like you were going to change the bulb, hold it (the fixture with the bulb) behind your back and plug it in for a second. dont look at the bulb its bad for your eyes. but it'll throw more than enough light for you to tell if its on.

Btw you can buy replacement bulbs on eBay for about 1/10 the cost of retail. I bought two this year and they work fine and have not burned out yet.I had a lot of problems with turbotwist brand bulbs burning out after only a month or two. I even had them warrantied by them. At 38 bucks a bulb after tax I gave up and bought the eBay ones..
