Replacement plant ideas

Hi folks,

My tank was meant to be simple but amazing - Eleocharis Vivipara along the back wall to create a wavy natural look, and Eleocharis parvula as a carpet.

The Parvula is spreading SLOWLY, but i think it will look good in a few months. The Vivipara is growing like crazy! But the thing is, its not tall wavy grass, as it tangles its self up into a big mess! So twice a week i need to cut it downs, try to thin it out (but in the clumps it forms thats really tricky!!) so its just not working out!

SO, can someone suggest something to replace it with? I want tall thin plants to line the back of my aquarium like a wall. Ideally it would be a lighter/brighter green than the vivipara as its quite dark. I am thinking not a grass type plant as the same thing will happen.

THanks

tall and thin plants will always form tangles of leaves if your water current is directed towards them. try directing the filter output towards the glass or substrate, or get a smaller filter.

If I understand correctly you are wanting a thin wall of plants along the back glass of your aquarium. Have you tried Vals? I have seen that done using val plants. I have a friend who has them grow up the sides of his 90 tall and then gets them to fold over towards the middle of the tank in the current. looks cool.

Yup, that sounds like what i want. But this 'Vals' what is there proper name? Do they come in a lot of different types?

I realise a lot of tall plants will get tangled, but i think because the stuff i have is 'grass' it does it a lot worse!!

Cyperus helfiri is another larger grass like plant. Both vals and cyperus have considerably larger "blade" size than any type of hairgrass so it may not quite provide the look you want. Have you tried combing the vipara to detangle it (have to be careful not to yank the plant out of the ground but it does work). In combination with decreased current it might allow more the look you are going for.
