Purigen didn't regenerate well

Hi guys,

I regenerated my purigen for the first time yesterday. It was in my tank about 3 weeks and turned a brownish tint. I soaked it in a 1:1 bleach water solution for 36 hours and it's still just as brown.

I left it in its bag when I soaked it but I'm now soaking again outside the bag.

Any ideas why it's not working well?

FWIW, mine never looks new when I've recharged it. Have photos that look quite similar, and I even up the bleach by 50% which then takes even more rinsing/neutralizing. I use the browner stuff one more time in my "fish" tanks, and buy new for my shrimp tanks. Curious is others have this same experience.

My experience is similar; it never goes back to the original colour, but still seems to work just fine.

Be sure to soak in some dechlorinator after you're done recharging it with bleach

Hi @Jah410,

Look closely at your bleach. Does it say 'no splash' or 'scented'? If so that is not what you want to use. You want plain old concentrated chlorine bleach.

It seems cheaper to just buy a new bottle of purigen than use that much prime

I'm using a bottle that makes no mention of scent or splash.

I decided to resoak outside of the bag and it seems much whiter. Wondering if it basically just left a bunch of macro organic matter inside the bag when it cleaned amd that got rubbed around on the surface of the prime.

I used seachem Safe which is like the concentrated form. 16g of a 250g bottle needed per regen. Bottle is 11 bucks so it's about 70 cents per regeneration.

Sadly I wiped out my entire aquarium 3 days ago using "splash less bleach " I soaked my Purigen like I always have for years ( with no issues ) did a really thorough rinse, did the sniff test, was all good. Placed Purigen back in the canister filter, next morning almost all my fish were dead ! 4 dwarf rainbows, 12 cherry barbs , and 10 harlequin rasboras. The only survivors are 2 panda garras & my four year old otocinclus. It was a devastating loss.

I use full bleach. 1 cup per bag. No water.
My oldest bag of purigen still works well after more than 10 times of recharging.

That said, I stop using purigen recently. Removed them from all of my filters.
Any matured filter should have no problem polishing water.
Unless you're having problem with tannin, I don't see the benefit of using purigen.

I have 4-5 bags of purigen in circulation and they regenerate very well and without issue - a day in the bleach solution, a day in prime, then a couple of baths in RO water. I'm sure each bag has been regenerated 10+ times at this point

First I've heard of Seachem Safe....will it out check
