Root tabs bleeding into water column
Hi guys, so a while back I planted some root tabs under my substrate. About 2 months later, I decided to rescape some portions and stirred up some substrate. I planted everything and it's growing in nicely, but I notice a significant rise in nitrate in the tank over a few days. I've got nerite snails which are sensitive to high levels of nitrate so I notice they start acting sluggish when the levels rise.
I've only got Cardinal tetras and amanos in the tank and have never seen a large bioload from them so I'm thinking it has to be the thrive root tabs leaking.
I've been doing 3 water changes per week which lowers the nitrate down to about 15ppm, but about 2 days later, it's closer up to around 40. Should I just keep doing the water changes (and stress my fish and my AR mini) or is there some alternative? I'm considering putting some fast growing floating plants in the tank for a while as a nitrate sink, but that'll probably cause the newly addded plants to suffer from light deprivation...
