Petrified wood increases ammonia levels?

I got two pieces of purified wood from my wife and soaked them in separate containers of treated water to see if they would adversely affect my ph or hardness. One had a chalky substance on part and dropped my 7.5 ph to below 6. Rejected that one. Thet other was good for all tests except it caused an ammonia increase from 0 to .7. I've never read anything about petrified wood doing this. I'm doing another week soak to see if it happens again. Has anyone else experienced this?
