Mel's diner and Flo rates...

I want to run my logic by Uall concerning a more accurate flow rate of water going through my freshwater sump. Today I TOPPED off my sump by syphoning from my tank to the sump. I marked the tank level on the 55 gallons glass and timed how long it took for the in tank level to reach the top. [.5 inches]. It took 70 seconds to pump 1.3 gallons of water or .01857 per second, or 1.114 a minute and 66.84 gallons per hour.

I must admit I thought it would be higher than that.

Your math seems good to me. In that you timed how long it took the water in your sump to fill .5 inches of tank water height? That took 70 seconds. A standard 55 gallon is 21" high so .5 inches should be about 1.3 gallons of water. If this is what you did then ya, sounds about right. What is the pump in your sump rated for? Also, are you satisfied with your filtration at present? Do you find the flow low?
