Cycling planted tank

Hey everyone,

About 10 days into cycling my planted aquarium. Used plants from previous tank and ones bought from store, a little bit of substrate from my other tank, and have not been dosing ammonia. Just wondering how I’m looking so far and what actions to take from here. My readings have pretty much been the same the past three days with ammonia at .50 ppm, nitrite at 0 ppm, and nitrate at about 40 ppm or above except on Monday it was at roughly 5.0 ppm? Any help or comments would help. Thanks!

How many plants do you have in there?
Seed your filter with some media or filter juice from the other tank, plant heavy and stock lightly from the beginning ... known as 'silent cycling'
Throw some water changes in there and you'll be ok... just remember planting heavy refers to stems/floaters

I have some Monte Carlo and dwarf sag. A good amount for a 22 gallon. No fish in currently either. How big of a water change should I do and how often during cycling? Thanks for your reply
