Also:
Guppies are Poecilia reticulata
Endlers are Poecilia wingei (stupid ending name)
Mollies are Poecilia sphenops

Platies are Xiphophorus maculatus
Swordtails are Xiphophorus helleri
I dont need any mutant babies! in case this does solve the problem. Are platies decently calm?
I'm going to say, you have already demonstrated far more knowledge of this group than I will ever know as I still think of platies and mollies as almost the same! So cross breeding questions are way out of my field on these folks but I have a hard time seeing the crossing due to size, color, and lots of small points. Cichlids are more my thing and if I keep females of each group available, they tend to stick to their own in many cases. Some would breed with a shoe but most do prefer their own type!
So my thought would run along getting a fully different color and what was easy to get, as a try. Then I also like to have a fallback in mind, so I might locate somebody that "needs" a new fish for when I might want to change them out. The kids down the street think I'm really nice for bringing them fish but the secret is that I don't want to keep something that doesn't fit when I get them in trading!

You could try putting a plastic divider in the tank between the two as well.

In my limited experience with live bearers (recently anyways), platties are a touch more aggressive or can be. The lyretail mollies I had were more like big cows, you could pick on em but they pretty much just barrel roll ya out of the way and keep looking for food or to mate. I never saw the mollies pick on anything unless it was small and they were thinking of taking a nibble but even then they preferred food given to them or grazing off rocks and the glass.

I had a aggressive female koi betta that chased and picked on everyone but the two mollies. She would go after them but the big female would just kind of smack her with the side of here body and the betta would leave her alone after that (molly was twice the bettas size). That being said it didnt keep the betta from picking on everyone else.

The mollies are a little big for that size tank however.

I would put the chosen male in a separate tank. Let him establish that this is "his" home. Some larger mild tempered fish could help as well. Then, once he is comfortable in that environment, introduce the female. She will be in a different environment that is not her's. I believe this approach may give better results than trying to chemically sedate her.

I may come across as a know-it-all. In reality, I have no idea.
